Huron County Hunger Relief Project

Hunger Relief Project was started in 2003 by Merlin Yoder who called a community meeting at Pigeon River. He invited farmers, business people, and individuals to join an effort to provide food security for those around the world who suffer from malnutrition and hunger.
Farmers across Canada and the U.S were coming together with ideas on how to connect farmers here with the needs of people in remote villages of the world by funding agriculture training programs. The goal was to share how to grow crops in better ways and eliminate seasons of extreme hunger and malnutrition.
Since the meeting in 2003, around 15 local farmers from Huron County, Michigan, have consistently volunteered their time, equipment and fuel to raise crops to be sold for this mission. They currently farm 250 acres of land provided by 10 land owners, and use inputs donated by generous local AG suppliers and Coop elevators. Landowners provide free or reduced rent acres. Crops are grown and sold each year. This amazing Huron County community effort that sends an average of $150,000 per year to help fund food-security programs around the world managed by Growing Hope Globally (GHG). The 2024 report from GHG says Hunger Relief Project is one of 109 growing projects in the United States. Together these projects funded 45 food sovereignty projects in 31 countries helping 21,832 people find lasting solutions to hunger. Overall 2.3 million people now have food sovereignty.
Donations are welcome! Every dollar is multiplied many times by our farmers and area AG suppliers! Donations usually cover our land rent costs which is about $95 per acre. Note the contact information below.
HRP 2024 growing season proceeds totaled $165,000. GHG estimates 3,000 people will achieve food security from the funds Hunger Relief Project provided. 2024 Hunger Relief Project - Impact Report Summary
